![]() ![]() ![]() So instead of diving more deeply into the Tales series, I decided to play the spiritual successor to Tales of Phantasia, the aforementioned Star Ocean. I wanted to experience something similar, but sufficiently different to provide a sense of nuance. This novel battle system combined with the ability to cook food and modify items, provided an exciting experience that offered an engaging level of depth. I started with the exceptional Tales of Phantasia, a JRPG, but upon entering battle the player is thrusted into a side-scrolling, action RPG-like battlefield. Thirsty for more of what I was missing, I then stumbled upon fan translations for Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean, two games whose greatness were continually promoted on internet forums. I immediately followed with th e Fire Emblem SNES trilogy: Monshou no Nazo (Mystery of the Emblem), Seisen no Keifu (Genealogy of Holy War), and Thracia 776, the latter of which had an incoherent and essential barely usable translation (in 2019 TEAM EXILE fixed this issue by providing a near perfect translation HERE for details.)ĭespite all the issues with Thracia, and the epilogue of Seisen no Keifu not being translated (ouch), I still immediately considered these three games some of my all-time favorites. As a completed translation of the SNES version, it provided the entire experience, with a huge advantage over the slow loading times of the Final Fantasy Anthology edition for PlayStation. One of the first games I played was Final Fantasy V. Of course, the SNES was one of the focal points of the scene with compatibility increasing at a steady rate, and a blossoming community of fan translators giving English speakers, like myself, the opportunity to experience narratives previously locked away in Japan. As the decade progressed, access to games was exponentially increasing, with some of the more popular consoles receiving the most attention. You can also adjust the battle difficulty allowing you to enable more challenging combat or easier at your own discretion. In the early 2000s I began to dabble in the emulation scene. This cuts down on the travel and gets you into the action at a faster rate. There are augmented speed options allowing you to traverse the world quicker as well. You can opt for original character illustrations used in Star Ocean: First Departure or brand-new versions drawn by the famous illustrator Katsumi Enami who worked on Star Ocean: The Last Hope. There is a really good interview on the official PlayStation Blog with the illustrator as he goes over the process of creating these characters and their world. These options give you the chance to change the experience and find a new love in this game’s world. You can choose between the original full voice cast from the PSP or the newly recorded version featuring the voice cast from the original Super Famicom version in Japan. ![]() The game has some new features in its re-release. Once they reach the summit, the story beings as they encounter Ronyx and Ilia in a pillar of light. Metorx where a healing herb is rumored to grow. You are not alone, Roddick has his two friends Millie and Dorne by his side as they make their way to the neighboring town. Thos infected turn to stone but continue to live in a petrified state. Roddick is a member of the village’s local defense force when he learns fo a mysterious disease that has broken out in neighboring towns. You start on the primitive planet of Roak where a character known as Roddick lives. The game takes place on Space Date 346 in a distant galaxy. This game will be starting on the first game, so prior knowledge is not needed for enjoying this release. Pre-orders for the PlayStation 4 version of the game have begun and will include a commemorative theme and a digital mini soundtrack for from the 2019 live concert. This new release will be the fifth game to join the series. The original game, Star Ocean, was released for the PlayStation Portable.
